The Big Nickel, a tourist attraction and Sudbury landmark, is a nine-metre (30 ft) replica of a 1951 Canadian nickel, located at the grounds of Dynamic Earth in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
Greater Sudbury (2006 census population 157,857) is a city in Ontario, Canada. Greater Sudbury was created in 2001 by merging the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury, along with several previously unincorporated geographic townships. Originally named Sainte-Anne-des-Pins ("St. Anne of the Pines"), established as a mission by the Jesuits in 1883. Sainte-Anne des Pins played a prominent role in the development of Franco-Ontarian culture in the region. Until 1917, Sainte-Anne-des-Pins was the only Roman Catholic congregation in Sudbury.
The community started as a small lumber camp in McKim township. During construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883, blasting and excavation revealed high concentrations of nickel-copper ore at Murray Mine on the edge of the Sudbury Basin. Earlier, in 1856, provincial land surveyor Albert Salter had located magnetic anomalies in the area that were strongly suggestive of mineral deposits, although his discovery aroused little attention because the area was remote. However, the railway construction made large-scale mining development in the area economically feasible for the first time.
The community was renamed for Sudbury, Suffolk in England, the hometown of CPR commissioner James Worthington's wife.
Sudbury's economy went through boom and bust cycles as world demand for nickel rose and fell.

Jim explained on 5/11/2012:
"It appears that you have one of the first issues of medals sold as fund raisers for the Canadian Centennial Numismatic Park in 1964. It was coined by Wellings and the engraving done by BI/Ben Ireland. It was produced in several metals with the silver, gold and platinum numbered on the rim edge. The plant is the Copper Cliff Inco nickel smelter which the park overlooked. The Big Nickel was to be the centerpeice of the park. If you take a close look at the base of the nickel, you can see initials BC/ Bruno Cavallo builder of the 30 foot diameter monolith TS/ Ted Szilva owner and developer/ JG John Gooderale an investor. It was also issued in a 27mm format in nickel only. A good start on a collection I'd say. Cheers Jim"
