Jeton on a failed attempt by the Spanish to conquer Doesburg. It belongs to a series of military actions during the Eighty Years' War in which the Spanish army was led by Mendoza and the Netherlands by Maurice of Nassau.

Francisco de Mendoza was the third son of the fourth Earl of Tendilla and fifth brother Luis Hurtado de Mendoza. He was born in La Alhambra in 1545 and studied literature at Alcala and Salamanca. He died in Madrid in 1623 before taking office as bishop of Siguenza.

Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (Dutch: Maurits van Oranje) (1567, Dillenburg – 1625) was sovereign Prince of Orange from 1618, on the death of his eldest half brother, Philip William, Prince of Orange, (1554–1618). Maurice was stadtholder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands (except in the province of Friesland) from earliest 1585 until his death in 1625.
Maurice organised the Dutch rebellion against Spain into a coherent, successful revolt and won fame as a military strategist. Maurice set out to revive and revise the classical doctrines of Vegetius and pioneered the new European forms of armament and drill.

Doesburg is a municipality and a city in the eastern Netherlands in the province of Gelderland. Doesburg received city rights in 1237 and currently has 11,602 inhabitants. The city is situated on the right bank of river IJssel, at the confluence of river Oude IJssel. The municipality of Doesburg is part of the Arnhem-Nijmegen agglomeration region.

In 1587 Dutch-occupied Ruhrort (near Duisburg in Germany) was besieged and conquered by Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. During the stadtholders' large offensive of 1597. Maurice of Nassau first seized the fortress of Rheinberg, a strategic Rhine crossing, and subsequently Groenlo, Oldenzaal, and Enschede, before crossing into Germany and capturing Lingen and the county of the same name. This reinforced Dutch hegemony in the Ems valley. Capture of these cities secured for a while the dominance of the Dutch over eastern Overijssel and Gelderland, which had hitherto been firmly in Spanish hands.
In 1598 The Spanish send troops into Vest Recklinghausen and the County of Mark. Among other towns, Recklinghausen was taken by General Francisco de Mendoza and his 24,000 soldiers. In 1599, his troops are before the town of Dortmund and the surrounding area is plundered. During the Eighty Years' War involving the Netherlands, the bordering areas of the Lower Rhine and Westphalia are crossed repeatedly by both Spanish and Dutch troops. Castrop, for example, suffers greatly from plundering.
