Åšwiebodzice (German: Freiburg) is a town in south-western Poland with 22,793 inhabitants (as of 2019). It is situated in Åšwidnica County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
The town dates back to the medieval Kingdom of Poland. It was granted town rights by 1279. Its old fortifications from around 1279, still remain. From the Late Middle Ages until 1945, the town had a predominantly German population and was known as Freiburg.

Ernest Hugo Kramst (1826-1860), a representative of the Freiburg-Świebodzice industrialist family, which in the 19th century was considered one of the richest families in Lower Silesia (hence their nickname: the Silesian Rockefellers), is considered to be the first historical builder of the palace. He began to build his residence in 1858, hence the literature sometimes uses the German name of the palace as "Hugoschloss" (Hugo's Castle). Unfortunately, the early death of the founder of the palace, who died on January 2, 1860, at the age of 34, meant that the construction of the palace was not fully completed. The unfinished palace was inherited from the deceased by his wife Maria née Seidel (or Seydel). However, with the takeover of the building, financial difficulties arose, so hopes for the completion of this ambitious investment were quickly shattered. The would-be residence of Count Kramsta, left to its own devices, began to lose its importance with time and fell into ruin. It was only after a dozen or so years - in 1875 - that one of the local entrepreneurs - Robert Seidel, the owner of a local brewery - became interested in it again, who decided to continue the construction of the abandoned residence.
