Az-Zahir Ghazi ( â€Ø§Ù„ملك الظاهر غازي بن ØµÙ„Ø§Ø Ø§Ù„Ø¯ÙŠÙ†â€Ž, DMG: al-Malik aẓ-ẒÄhir Ä ÄzÄ« b. SalÄḥ ad-DÄ«n; or al-Malik az-Zahir Ghazi; 1172 – 8 October 1216) was a Kurdish governor and then ruler of Aleppo from 1186 to 1216. His lands included northern Syria and a small part of Mesopotamia. al-Zahir Ghazi was the third son of Saladin (Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub). The lands that he was assigned to govern were under the control of his uncle, Al-Adil I (al-Malik al-Adil Sayf al-Din Abu-Bakr ibn Ayyub), who was Saladin’s younger brother.
Salah al-Din Yusuf, popularly known as Saladin, is known for his military genius and success in the Crusades. He recaptured Jerusalem from the crusaders 1187 and famously spared the inhabitants of the city. Saladin was also the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, which ruled large parts of the Near East and Yemen from 1169 until the end of the 15th century.
