Obv.: ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS , Mexico's national symbol, an eagle with a snake in beak, perched on cactus, enclosed in a circle formed by the legend and a wreath. (type 2 national emblem minted 1955-71).
Rev.: 20 / M° // CENTAVOS / 1971 , Mexico's Liberty Cap with inscription "LIBERTAD" in the center of rays, beneath mint mark of Mexico City, in center the Mayan pyramid temple at Teotihuacán and surrounding landscape, the "Piramide del Sol", inscription "TEOTIHUACAN" at the basis; volcanos Ixtaccihuatl and Popocatepetl in background, cacti on both sides at the bottom.

"The career of this big copper coin spanned more than its 28-year production life, however—I’ve been told that bowls of these coins used to sit on the tops of Mexican bars for years after the new, smaller copper-nickel 20-centavo began replacing them in 1974. (The bowls full of these older coppers were for use in the bars’ pay phones.)"

The Piramide del Sol means "The Pyramid of the Sun", and Teotihuacan means "The City of the Gods".

La moneda que estuvo con nosotros más de 30 años
- 4 fechas de esta pieza, tienen más valor.

Probablemente una de las monedas que más recordamos con nostalgia dentro de la Colección del Siglo XX, sea los 20 centavos de bronce, que nos alcanzaban para tantas cosas… Esta pieza está compuesta de 95% de cobre, 4% de zinc y 1% de estaño.

Por decreto presidencial de 3 de agosto de 1943, se autorizó la emisión de esta moneda de bronce. “Los cuños de esta moneda fueron hechos por el grabador de la ceca de México, Manuel Luna Negrete, con la colaboración de su ayudante, Francisco Rivera Paniagua”.
