Side in Pamphylia, Valerian I., 253-260 AD.,
5 and 11 Assaria / Æ 30 (30-31 mm / 20,47 g),
Obv.: AYT KAI ΠO ΛI[K OVAΛЄPIANOC CЄ]B , laureate, daraped, and ciurassed bust of Valerian I. right, seen from back; circular countermark Є before, on older value mark IA (Howgego 803).
Rev.: BPA ΠVΘIAC IЄPOC MVCTIKOC / CIΔHC / NЄΩ / KOPΩN , two brabeia (prize crowns) on an agonistic table, both contain a palm branch, between them pomegranate(?).
SNG von Aulock - ; BMC - ; SNG PfPs. - (reverses with two brabeia exist, but different legends) ; Isegrim database - ; for countermark: Howgego 803 (37 pieces, 36 on coins of Side).
The Є of the countermark should probably revalue the coin to 5 assaria units. Coins from Side often show pomegranates because 'side' in Pamphylian means 'pomegranate'.
