Hypaepa in Lydia, 198-204 AD., Geta Caesar, Æ 23, SNG Turkey 5, 420 and 422.
Hypaepa in Lydia, Geta Caesar, struck 198-204 AD., countermarked ca. 204 AD.,
Æ 23 (22-23 mm / 4,33 g),
Obv.: [Λ C]ЄΠ - ΓЄTAC K[AI] , bare-headed, (draped, and cuirassed?) bust right, (seen from back?); on breast, oval countermark: cult image of Artemis Anaïtis.
Rev.: ΥΠΑΙΠ - [ΗΝΩΝ] , Tyche standing frontal, head left, [wearing modius?}, holding rudder and cornucopiae.
SNG Turkey 5, 420 and 422; Bergama 1788.
thanks to Dane (“Helvetica“) for the reference

for countermark: Howgego 233 (111 pieces, 108 from Hypaepa, 9 on coins of Geta Caesar) .

The latest coins of Hypaepa wich were countermarked like this seem to belong to the reign of Septimius Severus.

Artemis Anaïtis was a fusion of the Persian goddess Anahita and the Greek Artemis. Tacitus (Annals 62) refers to the syncretic deity simply as the “Persian Diana”, who had a temple in Lydia “dedicated in the reign in of Cyrus” (presumably Cyrus the Great).
