This issue commemorates the Roman victory of Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus in 121 BC over the Allobroges and their ally Bituitus, King of the Arverni in Gaul. Bituitus was shortly thereafter captured and paraded in his own silver chariot in the triumph of Fabius.
In 118 BC a Roman colony was founded at Narbo, when and where this issue was struck.
