Operation Torch (initially called Operation Gymnast) was the British-American invasion of French North Africa during the North African Campaign of the Second World War which started on 8 November 1942. By 13 May, the Axis forces in Tunisia had surrendered. This opened the way for the Allied invasion of Sicily.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower was given command of the operation, and he set up his headquarters in Gibraltar.
